U21FC Davitts 3-9 Creggan 1-12
|
This first round match saw two teams give everything they had in a hard fought and entertaining encounter. Davitts started the brighter and raced into a 1-2 to no score lead with D Largey picking off two quality points and P Dynes blasting the ball to the net following a fine solo run.
Creggan opened their account with two well taken points but further scores from P Dynes and F McCabe kept Davitts in control and in front 1-4 to 0-2. Despite Davitt’s domination, Creggan got themselves back into the match with a swift break up field, which resulted in a well-taken goal and a further minor reduced the deficit to a single point. Both teams then went on a point for point exchange with D Largey and S McCarthy the Davitt scorers to leave the half time score Davitts 1-6 Creggan 1-5.
Creggan came out flying in the second half and a brace of points saw them edge in front for the first time but the Davitt’s response was solid, and a point from S Toner followed by an A Jack goal took the score to 2-7 to 1-7. Creggan responded again with three unanswered points to level the scores but a S Toner point put Davitt’s back in front with seven minutes to go. Creggan levelled again but P Dynes with his second goal of the game and a F McCabe point secured the win for Davitts despite a last effort by Creggan and a further point leaving the final score Davitts 3-9 Creggan 1-12.
Best for Davitts were P Dynes, D Largey and S O’Neill. Both teams should be commended for their work rate, the quality of their score taking and the spirit in which the game was played. |

Minor Football League - Davitts v St John's
|
Davitts minor footballers first game in the All County winter league resulted in a loss to a better drilled and more balanced St. John's outfit at Twinbrook. Before the game had settled down, the Johnnies had raced into a nine point lead with two goals in as many minutes and a few long range points. Stephen Toner and Lee Kennedy battled hard but with many key players missing, Davitts were always up against it. The visitors looked sharper and held a comfortable lead at half time. Whether St John's took their foot off the pedal or the fact that Davitts played with more enthusiam and intent, the second half was a better spectacle for those who braved the cold and bitter weather. The home side played in patches and enjoyed much more possession than in the first half. Although victory was out of their reach, their endeavours were rewarded when young Gareth Toner bagged a goal midway through the half. St. John's however, maintained the points gap with some well executed points and a couple of frees to run out handy winners. Davitts are away to St. Josephs next Sunday with another 11.30am throw-in. Players to meet @ clubrooms @ 10.15am sharp. |

Child Protection Awareness Course
|
A Child Protection Awareness Course was held in the clubrooms on Thursday December 2005. The course was delivered by Monica Culbert and was well attended by club coaches.
The Club Chairman, Tommy Shaw, opened the course by introducing Monica and explaining to the attendees the importance of adhering to the club's code of conduct and the importance of ensuring that we continue to adhere to the policies and practices associated with making sport enjoyable and safe for all our children.
Monica then proceeded to outline the code of ethics and Good Practice for Children's Sport which has been agreed between An Comhairle Spoirt and Sport's Council NI. She gave a comprehensive presentation on the roles and responsibilities of coaches, team mentors, helpers and the children themselves, explaining good practice guidelines which help create a positive culture and climate within sport.
By the end of the evening everyone was fully aware of their responsibilty to provide a safe, positive and nuturing environment where children can develop and enhance their physical and social skills and that promoting a child centred ethos should go hand in hand with identifying and eliminating practices that impact negatively on safe and enjoyable participation in all activities provided by the club. |

Davitts 3-11 Cloughmills 3-7
Davitts turned in a hard fought and sprirted performance to avenge their championship defeat at the hands of Cloughmills and proceed to the Division 3 play-off final against Clooney Gaels.
This was a hard fought battle all over the park and with Davitts playing with the wind advantage in the first half Cloughmills were put under extreme pressure. However, after Davitts got the first point of the game Cloughmills went up the pitch and from a rebounded shot the ball ended up in the back of the net. This actually kick started the Davitt effort and with some great play and some nice scores they got on top to go in at the interval with a six point advantage.
The second half saw Cloughmills renew their effort but the Davitt's defence held solid. Davitts had many chances to extend their lead but failed to hit the target. This allowed Cloughmills to edge their way back into the game and with a few minutes to go a long range point tied the scores. The game looked as if it could be heading for extra time but sub Ciaran Wright with his first touch of the match struck a tremendous point which was quickly followed with the killer goal which was to win it for Davitts.
Outstanding in defence for Davitts was Sean Smyth, ably assisted by Kev McParland while the midfield of Mooney and Prenter battled hard. Credit must be given to all Davitts players for their committment and effort and to the forward line who worked hard to get their scores.
It is now fitting that the teams that finished first and second in the league format, Clooney Gaels and Davitts should now contest the decider for promotion to Division 2. |

ACFL Div 2A
Davitts 1-11 St. Teresa’s 1-7
Davitts consolidated their top two position with a four-point victory at Twinbrook on Monday night. Depending on the Gort na Mona–Aghagallon result, they could possibly top the section. Either way, they will secure home advantage in the play-off’s.
With no recent football, both teams looked rusty and the early exchanges brought mistimed and misplaced passes. St. Teresa’s did have an early goal chance when they were awarded a penalty but keeper Tommy Toland was down quickly and deflected the ball out for a ’45.
The visitors were first to score after nine minutes when Sean McGoldrick kicked a point after good work outfield. They had doubled their lead before Davitts’ Tony Creen registered their first point. St. Teresa’s regained their two-point lead but midway through the half, Davitts had drawn level with points from Tony Creen and Sean Og Prenter.
Davitts then went in front through a Gerard Burns point before Philly Maguire again levelled matters. With 5 minutes of the half remaining, Sean Smyth converted a free for Davitts and captain Ciaran O’Riordan sent over a great point from distance to put the home side two ahead at the break, 0-6 to 0-4.
From the throw-in, Smyth was again on target, this time from play, as the home side extended their lead to three. A Conor McGoldrick point reduced the deficit before the first goal of the game. It fell to the visitors and came courtesy of a goalkeeping error. St Teresa’s quickly added a point to edge ahead (1-5 to 0-7).
Some positional changes and substitutions gave Davitts new options and one of the subs, Joe Mc Donnell, kicked a great point from wide on the left. With legs tiring, the game was very open and the play moved from end to end. However, Davitts were to register 1-2 to no reply, effectively sealing the game. Gerard Burns took his tally to two with an exquisite score and Kev McParland converted a free before Burns rose above the keeper on the edge of the square to fist the ball to the net .
Another McParland free put the home side six ahead with time running out. A late burst from St. Teresa’s brought them two points but with the second of these coming in added time, they were merely consolation scores. Davitts 1-11 St. Teresa’s 1-7 |
