ACFL Div 2 – Mac Dáibhéid 0-15 Naomh Seosamh 1-12

The senior footballers came away with a draw at home to Naomh Seosamh on Wednesday night at Páirc Mhic Dháibhéid but if truth be told the Glenavy men were somewhat fortunate to leave with a point. We played the more controlled football but unfortunately at crucial times we let Naomh Seosamh off the hook and had to dig deep to pull back a three point deficit late in the game.

A well worked period of possession finished with the opening point of the game from Niall McParland and was quickly followed by our second from Sean O’Neill. The Glenavy men responded to tie the game and from here on traded point for point and at the 25th minute the sides were level 0-7 to 0-7 with Sean O’Neill (0-3) and Gerard Slane (0-2) on target. The final point of the half came from Naomh a Seosamh free and we trailed at the break 0-7 to 0-8.

Two early second half points from Gerard Slane edged us in front, but the game followed a similar pattern to the first. Each time we went in front, Naomh Seosamh levelled and at the 25th minute were tied 0-12 to 0-12, our points coming from Gerard Slane, CJ Sullivan and Sean O’Neill. Despite the scoreline we looked to be the team that would go on and take the points but a long range Naomh Seosamh lobbed into the net and we found ourselves behind with time ticking away. However, all credit as we showed great battling qualities and determination to raise the level as we scored three successive points, two from Ceavy Slane, one a nice fist score over the bar and a CJ Sulliavn score from 45 meteres to level the game.

We had all the momentum but unfortunately time had caught up on us and with score 0-15 to 1-12 the referee brought the game to an end.

Scorers: N McParland 0-1, S O’Neill 0-5, G Slane 0-5, CJ Sullivan 0-2 and C Slane 0-2.
