Junior B Hurling Final – Davitts 0-16 St Agnes 1-10

DSC_0002The senior hurlers attoned for last years defeat to Glenravel in the Junior B Hurling Championship final when defeating St Agnes at St Teresas pitch last night by 3 points. We had a couple of early attacks which should have resulted in points and failure to score subsequently saw us caught out when St Agnes found the net to open the scoring. We DSC_0192didn’t panic and struck 5 unanswered points from Chris Gallagher 0-2, Sean Prenter 0-1, Canice Mooney 0-1 and Peter Carleton 0-1. A St Agnes’ point reduced the deficit but a Colm McKee pointed reply restored our 2 point lead. However, St Agnes then struck 2 quick points to level the game. Both teams traded further points (Chris Gallagher) before we finished the half strongly with points from Canice Mooney, Chris Gallagher and Colm McKee which gave us a 3 point half time lead.

The conditions deteriorated in the second half and credit has to be given to both teams as they probed for scores. In a tight half, we showed great commitment and determination, everything that St Agnes threw at us we stood firm and came back with more. We tightened up in defense and going forward were always a threat. Anytime St Agnes struck a DSC_0248point we came back with a score of our own. With 5 points from C Gallagher we held a 2 point advantage with time running out. A Colm McKee point from a tight angle gave us a 3 point cushion going into injury time and while we had a couple of chances to get the ensurance score we had done more than enough to deservedly take the title. Sean Fleming presented the trophy to team captain Gary Nelson. Photos from the game can be accessed by clicking here.

DSC_0275Congratulations is due to all the players; they displayed the hunger and passion that is required to win a championship title and got their just rewards – well done!
