The senior hurlers prevailed in this physical encounter to take the spoils with a five point winning margin. The hurling was hard and fierce with both teams going at it full pelt. The first half was nip and tuck as both teams tried to impose their authority on the game with never more than two points between the sides. In a well matched and exciting contest the scores were level at half time 0-9 to 1-6. Our scores in the first half came from Stephen McGivern 0-4, Alan Rainey 0-2, Tommy Toland 0-1 and Sean Prenter 0-2.
The second half started with both teams exchanging early points before a Lamh Dearg pointed 65 gave them a one point lead. However, a Sean Prenter goal and two Stephen McGivern points gave us a four point cushion. A Lamh Dearg goal left the minimum between the teams again. Stephen McGivern then added two further points but Lamh Dearg responded with a point followed by a goal to leave us trailing by a point. However we finished strongly with two quick goals from Alan Rainey and Canice Mooney. We followed this with a quality point from a move which involved Sean McElhatton who delivered a diagonal cross field pass to Canice Mooney who played a pass down the line into the hand of Alan Rainey who duly dispatched the sliotar between the posts. The final score of the match was a Lamh Dearg point to see us claim the win on a score of 3-15 to 3-10.I’ll not single out anyone specifically for their contribution as I think it’s suffice to say that it was a great team performance with everyone prepared to battle all over the pitch to ensure we came out on the winning side.
