First up was Andersonstown Leisure Centre where our new recruits sampled their first hurling games, these kids hurled very well on the day. We beat Ardoyne and St Galls, drew with Lamh Dearg and a last minute goal from Sarsfields saw them inflict our only defeat.
Second up was the North Antrim Division 3 at Boys Model, our B team competed and hurled with commitment but didn’t get any luck in front of goal and on another day these narrow defeats could have went another way. We went down to three losses against Glenariffe, St Endas and Cloughmills.
In the afternoon we travelled to Ballycastle for the Division 1, as notoriously slow starters we went down to Cushendall 3-1 but had chances which the scoreline didn’t reflect. We then beat Loughiel 4-1, followed by 3-2 win against Eoghan Ruadh. Next was an exceptional Ronan Donnelly’s Ballycastle team that won 6-0 who will no doubt win the final. Lastly we beat Ballygalget 5-1 with probably our best performance of the day. We missed out on the final by one point but left content that our young hurlers had competed at the highest level.
As the mentors reflect on a day we must feel as a club hurling foundations are now in place at this level and with numbers growing it can only bode well for our future. I would like to say well done to all our young hurlers on the day Patrick McFarlane, John Kennedy, Leo Tully, Declan Keenan, Deaglan Kearney, AJ Mahers, Dylan McNally, Corey O Hare, Padraig Keenan, Gerard Francis Heaney, Oisin Heaney, Michael Jones, Conor Maguire, Kieran Dempsey, Sean Smyth, Kevin Mullan, Eamon Toner, Aidan Downey and Miceal Kennedy.
